The city of Mumbai, 20 million people strong, is a staggering dichotomy of rich and very, very poor. The slums of the city--the largest with over nine million--stretch for miles and miles along the highway system. People dressed nealy in their work clothes, waiting for the bus, talking on their mobile phones go home every evening to shanties with far less space than we have for closets.
Our God is the GOD of the slums so where does the church fit in?
New Life Fellowship, the largest church in India gathering in area congregations and home churches throughout the country--without owning or building one single facility--and concentrating their efforts on Unreached People Groups, has found a key to growing His Church. Their dedicated, grass-roots staff plants churches like you wouldn't believe. They focus on meeting the needs of the people in their communities, eventually bringing them to Christ. We visited their preschool program, which takes 3-5 year olds off the slum streets during the day (32 children in a 10'x10' classroom) feeding them their one meal of the day while their parents are working. The teachers, certified by the government, find a way to convey Jesus' love to the parents through their children and begin churches when new believers are baptized. The church's goal is to staff 100 Dalwadi (preschools) throughout the city. They are well on their way. Their ministires are also among the leper colony, the eunuchs, and other untouchables. We will see their vocational training programs in action this afternoon when we visit their tailoring class. They teach literacy, computers, candle making, and beading as well, all for the goal of helping provide an economic future for slum families.
New Life Church in Mumbai believes in the supernatural. We were privileged to attend the staff meeting of 30 pastors and leaders where we heard story after story of how God has revealed His power through miracles of healing and provision. The Hindu gods cannot compete when our God makes known His supremacy and people are brought to their knees and to the Church. What an awesome God we serve!
